WINTERREISE

WINTERREISE

"Winterreise" ("Winter Journey") is a song cycle composed by Franz Schubert in 1827, based on a selection of poems by Wilhelm Müller. It consists of 24 songs that narrate a young man's emotional journey through a winter landscape after being rejected in love. The cycle delves deep into themes of isolation, despair, and existential questioning, making it one of the most profound and poignant works in the art song repertoire.

Schubert's music vividly captures the emotional turmoil and stark beauty of the winter landscape, intertwining with Müller's poetry to create a haunting and evocative portrayal of the human condition. "Winterreise" remains a seminal work in the genre of German lieder, admired for its depth of expression and psychological insight.

In Winter Journey at Cork Midsummer, Winterreise will be brought into a new interpretation, scored by our artists as you wander through Cork’s enchanted streets.
